The Error of Hymenaeus

Post by Strangelove on Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:50 am

I put this in the Apostasy section becasue Hymenaeus clearly held some kind of belief that erred from the truth badly and I want to find out what it was.

He's mentioned twice in Pauls letters to Timothy, both in conjunction with other named people (possibly followers of him)

Heres the scripture:

(1 Timothy 1:18) This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

(1 Timothy 1:19) Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

(1 Timothy 1:20) Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

It seems from this we can see that Hymenaeus:

a) Put away his faith and good concience.
b) Paul delivered him to Satan (Wow this was serious). Basically condemnation.
c) Was blaspheming God in some way.

And then in the second book:

(2 Timothy 2:15) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

(2 Timothy 2:16) But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

(2 Timothy 2:17) And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

(2 Timothy 2:18) Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

d) Were babbling profanely and vainly. (about what?!)
e) Have erred from the truth
f) Say that the ressurection is past already
g) Were causing some to overthow their faith.

It seems we are told what the subject of this mans error was, namely saying that the ressurection is past already.

So my question for the forum is, what do you think was the EXACT error that Paul is trying to expose here. It's something to do with the timing of the ressurection obviously...but WHAT ressurection (spiritual or literal/bodily) and of WHO (Jesus or people)?

Thanks.

Doc.

I believe that the error of Hymanaeus was that he said our resurrection has already happened in a "spiritual" way. Kind of the same hooey we are hearing all the time now. "Your spirit is resurrected when you die, and that spirit lives forever in heaven."

I've never been much comforted by the funeral saying, "you are never really dead if you are in the hearts of the living." It's a cheap way of denying the resurrection. If Jesus doesn't raise us up alive when He returns, what are we doing this for? If Christianity is for this life only, we are to be pitied more than anyone else.

I agree. I'm looking for the bodily second coming and ressurection.

I split this topic and put the bulk here:

Does Our Soul/Spirit Go to the Lord When We Die?

It seems the Corinthians were having a similar problem getting to grips with the ressurection:

(1 Corinthians 15:12) Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
(1 Corinthians 15:13) But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
(1 Corinthians 15:14) And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
(1 Corinthians 15:15) Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
(1 Corinthians 15:16) For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
(1 Corinthians 15:17) And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
(1 Corinthians 15:18) Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
(1 Corinthians 15:19) If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
(1 Corinthians 15:20) But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
(1 Corinthians 15:21) For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
(1 Corinthians 15:22) For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
(1 Corinthians 15:23) But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
(1 Corinthians 15:24) Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

Now, the question again is, what is the 'ressurection' the Corinthians were doubting?

Was it the re-birth of the new man in Christ or the bodily ressurection that cometh at the end, when Christ returns?

For me there can only be one answer...how could anyone doubt the re-birth spiritual ressurection? It wouldn't be an issue.

It must be the bodily ressurection of believers on the last day when Christ comes.

I agree, the error of Hymie must have been to teach otherwise.

Doc baby, you beat me to it. afro
listened to some sermons last night on this very topic.

Son, sorry budski....your metaphysical interpretation doesn't work for me.

i'll take first resurrection is the new birth...we are now alive forever, then literal bodily resurrection (glorified) and a Literal Glorified Jesus at the end.

Ὑμέν (hymen) is greek for skin or membrane. Hymenoptera is an order of insects that has membrane (hymen) wings (ptera). The bees, wasps, and ants.

I didn't want to type Hymenaeus each time, so I called him Hymie.

Ὑμέν was also the greek god of weddings. Probably Hymanaeus was named in honor of this god.
