How/Why Do We Stop Sinning? Empty How/Why Do We Stop Sinning?

Post by strangelove Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:11 am

When I came to faith in Christ I stopped sinning by nature. As I spent more time joyfully meditating on the Word of God I had less and less time for movies, music, video games, watching sport etc.

After I found Jesus, I began to turn away from sex scenes in movies out of embarresment. It's weird, I never used to do that...but now I somehow feel really uncomfortable watching sex on TV.

I began to desire less the thiongs of the world. I didnt feel like going out to bars and clubs. I began to drink much less and eventually this led to almost completely eliminating drunkeness out of my life. Now, on the extremely rare occasions that I do get drunk...I become violently ill the next day. This makes me EVEN LESS likely to get drunk the next time. Eventually the gaps between drunkeness got so far apart that I honestly cant remember the last time I got 'falling down' drunk.

I kept smoking weed for a while after I came to my faith, I didnt really feel there was anything wrong with a pot smoking Christian for a while...about 3 or 4 months. After some time, I started to smoke less and less. It wasnt really a concious decision, it just happened. When I finished a stash one day, I just thought....I'm not gone bother with it anymore. Something felt wrong. Latewr I discovered from scripture that God hates drugs.

How and why did you stop sinning? Is it a similar story to mine, or did you have to make a list of all the stuff you need to repent against, make a plan, a strategy, search the scripture Old and New Testaments to find out what you needed to do to repent, and are constantly battling with sin?

I dont feel like its a battle. Maybe its just me...but....I feel the Holy Spirit is working in me and bringing about repentance naturally. I feel like it is God who has free'd me from sin.

BOTH.
He is continually working sanctification, having crushed the worst and most damaging sinful addictions immediately (8 years ago)....

as i consumed the Word (so starved i wasn't satisifed for well over a year straight, 10-18 hours per day 7 days a week) i learned more about The Law of course, and as i did, it continued (and continues) to do it's work: revealing and exposing sin, and driving me again, closer, turning turning to Him Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.

I never stopped sinning. I was a sinner then and
i am still a sinner now. I do not agree that once you become a Christian
you stop sinning. Being sinless in the flesh is impossible. Only after the resurrection
when we receive our New bodies will we be sinless.

Well i did not think you where a person who supported the doctrines that teach that people with the Holy Spirit become sinless and never sin anymore.

But anyone new in the faith reading the first sentance of your OP could be justified into thinking that where one who supported such doctrines.

When I came to faith in Christ I stopped sinning by nature

Someone reading this would be forgiven for thinking that the statement "I stopped sinning" means that you stopped sinning.

Ya..good job for clarifying that Ad.

How about you? Did you find that you repented naturally after coming to the faith, without really having to dig in and battle at it too hard?

I remember getting a lot of dreams about things i said to other people. But the
weird thing was when i said what i said i felt the hurt the other person felt
from what i said. I remember wincing with regret and sadness from these dreams.
How could i have been so insensitive? How could i have been so cruel? What a
pig headed arrogant lowlife i was being.

I became far more sensitive after coming to the love of the truth of Jesus.
Before when watching TV news i was far more likely to be numb at reports of
suffering of others. Now the same kind of reports almost bring me to tears.

As for other sins i still struggle with some sins. God knows what i am talking
about here. I sometimes find myself in internal conflict with wanting to cease
sinning but knowing that my sin nature will not be overcome. Its like i ask
myself How much mental and emotional energy should i put into resisting said
sin? If i do put all efforts into sin elimination is that me wanting to resist
sin because i love the Lord of is that because i am striving for self-justification.
Is it love of God or pride of self? And again if we spend all our time fretting
over our sins does this steal away all our mental energy from seeking to do
good for others.

Often times i am more concerned with the good that i should have done but did
not do, then the bad things i should not have done but did.

hummm Romans 7 is coming to my mind now..

I guess my mind is still pondering these things.

I know what's a good idea. Please pray for me all you guys. So that i find the
sweet spot the right balance between sin avoidance and good doing. I will pray
for you guys as well. Sounds like a good deal?

I'm in agreement with you here Adstar. Balance is crucial. We cant be obsessed with eliminating sin completely from our lives. I think people who are like that just need to remember that Christs yoke is easy, His burden is light.

We should allow the Holy Spirit to work inside us and bring about sanctification without us trying to force it. Of course Christ's sinless life will always be our role model, but we have to realise that only God Himself has no sin.

Stay strong in your faith is the order of the day me thinks.

How/Why Do We Stop Sinning? Empty Re: How/Why Do We Stop Sinning?

Post by Son of Israel Tue Mar 01, 2011 6:47 pm

Thanks for sharing,

Living sinless in a sin-inclined body became my obsession when I recognized that Christ is that Pure Sinless Holy Spirit wanting to live inside of me, my Temple body, living my life. Just as I prayed for.
Jesus cleanses us from sin. Then, when He comes into us, He keeps us from sinning. He comes without sin unto salvation as it is written.
Those who still sin have issues to work out.
Those who say they've never sinned have issues to work out.

But those within whom Christ Lives, Christ is the Life in this body now. Not me. He bought it. It belongs to Him. I just watch. I give no occasion to the flesh to transgress. I chose Him. Now I let Him choose my steps.

I used to bear false witness.
I used to fornicate and covet my neighbor's wife.
I used to covet things.
I used to drink and do drugs.
I used to be proud.
I used to pollute the sabbath, never at rest.
I've broken every commandment and believe I was as evil as anyone here if not more.
But not anymore.

In times past, when a lust or a thought of sin would come to mind, it would find a stronghold of carnality not protected by Jesus, and I would speak or perform that sin.
But things are very different now.
Now, the very moment a sinful thought begins to try to peep up out of that grave where I buried it, Jesus is Faithful to jump right in immediately without a moment of hesitation and decapitate its ugly head right off. The temptation is cut right off. It is what I've prayed for so much. It is for real now.
And it is certainly nothing I could do.
That is my witness of His Power in making me His Son. The Son of Israel Smile

(Exo 4:22) And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

Blessings in Israel

I obviously have issues then coz I transgress the law now and again.

Still a sinner and expect to be one for the term of my natural life.

doc. God's Law is so demanding, that even as redeemed sinners we sin, and we sin daily.
anyone who says even as a new man the are able to fulfill even the First Commandment according to God's Perfect Standard may be confuzzled i think.

does everyone really love their neighbours as themsleves?

This Law of Life and Liberty with Christ in us is not demanding;

(Rom 8:2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Liberty from sin;

(2Co 3:17) Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

(Jas 1:25) But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

No confuzzlement here Smile

If someone is actively sinning, they should be very very concerned. That's the word of God;

(1Co 15:34) Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

Barnes Notes:

And sin not - Do not err; do not depart from the truth and from holiness; do not embrace a doctrine which is not only erroneous, but the tendency of which is to lead into sin. It is implied here, that if they suffered themselves to embrace a doctrine which was a denial of the resurrection, the effect would be that they would fall into sin or that a denial of that doctrine led to a life of self-indulgence and transgression. This truth is everywhere seen and against this effect Paul sought to, guard them. He did not regard the denial of the doctrine of the resurrection as a harmless speculation, but as leading to most dangerous consequences in regard to their manner of life or their conduct.

How many years have you been completely sinless Bruce?

Or do you sin but just not 'actively'?
