The children of Tussin

Dextromethorphan
may not be well known to you by name, but if you’ve ever taken a cough medicine
you’ve probably used it. It is what is called an antitussive or more simply a
cough suppressant. It is the active ingredient in nearly every major brand of
cough syrup, including Robotussin, Nyquil, Dimetapp, Vicks and coricidin. As a
cough suppressant it is effective, but its also a powerful SRI (Serotonin reuptake inhibitor). This term
may be familiar to you because SSRI’s are commonly prescribed as
antidepressants. Although it shares similarities with antidepressants it is
much more like cocaine in that it isn’t picky about what reuptakes it inhibits.
Even at nominal doses it can be a powerful dissociative and hallucinogen and is
used by teenagers and young adults for a “high”. According to erowid.org some
of the effects are as listed:

euphoria, mood lift
increased giggling and laughing
dissociation of mind from body
creative dream-like experiences
increased tactile sensation
empathic feelings, forgiveness, warm feelings towards
others

Those are the so called “positive”
effects of a Dextromethorphan “high”. There is a darker side however, a disorder that can be caused by this drug
called substance-induced psychosis. “Psychotic states may occur after ingesting a variety of substances both
legal and illegal and both prescription and non-prescription. Usually such
states are temporary and not irreversible”. Innocent over the counter cough
syrup can cause a temporary psychotic state. Now why would every major cough
syrup contain such a powerful drug….stay tuned and I’ll tell you.

In order to really understand the
Tussin agenda we need to take a moment and look at the history of this chemical.
This chemical was developed jointly by the CIA and Navy between the years of 1954-64.
However according to a secretary of defense memorandum “ The involvement of the
Navy was only as a conduit for funds between The Central Intelligence Agency
and a researcher who was who was associated with a federal government agency”. During
the course of this project called MKPILOT over 800 different chemical compounds
were tested on opiate addicted “subjects”. Of the 8000 compounds tested 3 are
now “common drugs” Darvon (analgesic), Dextromethorphan
(antitussive), and lomotil (anti diarrheal). Of the 3 only one is likely to be taken by
nearly every modern American and to be ingested by children. Curiously Dextromethorphan was approved by the FDA in 1958 a full 6 years before the end of project MKPILOT. This was not the only CIA project at the Time MKSEARCH (mescaline,heroine,psylicibin) and its more famous brother MKULTRA(LSD) were also doing extensive drug “research”.
Unlike its more famous brothers though MKPILOT is the only “MK” project that produced novel pharmaceuticals that are “willingly” and legally used by the public.

Okay you might say, sure it was developed by the CIA but maybe it’s just actually a really good cough suppressant that was coincidentally developed by the CIA. I mean there is no reason why the CIA couldn’t happen across a great cough suppressant in the course of testing 800 different chemicals on a bunch of opiate addicts. It must be a very effect remedy because every year Americans spend billions of dollars on cough syrup. While money talks, Richard Irwin, chairman of a cough guidelines committee for the American College of Chest Physicians is saying something different. Dr. Irwin says “the best studies that we have to date would suggest there’s not a lot of justification for using these medications because they haven’t been shown to work,”. So how did a hallucinogenic, psychosis inducing, mood altering, ineffective cough suppressing drug developed by the CIA, become the primary active ingredient in every major brand of cough syrup?...because clearly what its best at doing, isn’t suppressing coughs.

The first key concept for Habermas's thoughts on rhetoric is the idea of the 'ideal speech situation'. The 'ideal speech situation' requires what we would think of as "fair play" in dialogue.
